Baking Soda Sea Art

I’ve always wanted to try this easy summer craft. All you need is 3 simple ingredients from your kitchen to bring the feel of the ocean to your own backyard.  You can make these sea creatures with the kids and then let them use them in a nature display again and again.  A fun summer activity to bring the ocean a little bit closer when its not convenient to go in real time. We followed the recipe at https://www.kiwico.com and  had a blast.

All you need is:

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of corn starch
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • large bowl
  • stirring utensil
  • parchment paper
  • sculpting tools (toothpicks and pencils
  • microwave or stove

Mix the cornstarch, baking soda and water together in a large bowl and microwave in 20 second intervals until the mixture looks like mashed potatoes or heat on the stove on medium heat until it has “mashed potato” consistency. Be careful! The bowl or pan will be hot. Remove from heat and wait until it is cool enough to safely touch. Knead the dough until it has a smooth consistency. Add a little bit of water or baking soda if the mixture is too dry or too moist. Once it is smooth and dough-like, let the fun begin!
